March Risk & Safety Highlight: Confused About Concussions
You’ve bumped your head and might have a concussion; now what? It’s difficult to know whether medical attention is needed.
Symptoms of concussions can vary from person to person. Some people develop symptoms immediately and sometimes they show up hours or even days later.
Know What to Look Out For:
- Headaches
- Vision issues
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness or off-balance
- Exhaustion
- Sensitivity to noise or light
- Personality changes or irritability
- Numbness or tingling
- Mental fog or concentration problems
- Clumsiness
- Emotions out of whack
- Changes to sleep
When to Call 911 for a Head Injury:
- Loss of consciousness
- Extreme drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Severe headache that won’t go away
- Unable to recognize people or places
- Numbness
- Slurred speech
- Blurred vision
- Weakness or decreased coordination
- One pupil larger than the other
- Unusual behavior, restlessness, agitation
- Neck pain
- Amnesia or memory problems
It’s better to be cautious. If you have even the slightest suspicion of a concussion, contact your physician.
